German for beginners – 18: prepositions

Lesson 18: Prepositions

What are prepositions? They’re words that stand just in front of nouns or personal pronouns, sometimes there’s an article in between. For example: in the kitchen. Or with John. They belong to the nouns and pronouns.

In German, these prepositions will have an effect on the case of the nouns and pronouns, and on their articles. So let’s see some of them:

The first column is with Akkusativ, the second is with Dativ.

Mind that in the following cases, the article and the preposition melt together: durch das = durchs, für das = fürs, um das = ums, bei dem = beim, zu dem = zum, zu der = zur.

Let’s do some exercises!
